Seniors! Seniors!

Wow time has really flown by.  My intention was to get a post up about the summer during the first week of school.  Teachers won't assign homework during the first few days, right? Wrong.  And I had to work on college applications!  It's definitely been exciting, but a huge time commitment.  In addition to all my work, I've been trying to embrace the energy of senior year, going to football games and the Homecoming dance.

CC takes on HC.

This summer was a summer of travel.  I spent two weeks up North, two out West, and two out East, leaving two at home for some time training with my team (and some special guests) and some family time.

I kicked off the summer with a 2 and a half week camp with LNR for the first few days, then driving over to Mount Itasca for a biathlon camp, and throwing in an ACT test in the middle, in Duluth.

I did a lot of driving those weeks, but luckily I had my sister's car whose great gas mileage made up for a lack of trunk space!

In July I headed out to Colorado for another biathlon camp, this time at altitude.  The focus was ski training, with a little shooting.  The biggest workout was the bike ride up Mt. Evans, the highest paved road in North America.  We also did another ride through Estes Park, and climbed Gray's and Torrey's, and Devil's Thumb, all 14,000+ feet.

In August I flew out to Boston to tour some colleges.  We started at Harvard, drove through UNH and Dartmouth, and finished the week at UVM.  My dad came with, so before he flew home we climbed Camel's Hump in Vermont.

 Mi Padre

I stayed in Jericho for a week for a training camp, followed by two races.  I won the sprint, and got second in the pursuit, taking home the famous Vermont Maple Syrup, which is the characteristic prize in Jericho.  After we spent a week at the Lake Placid OTC for more training before coming back home.

Another highlight of the summer was skiing with Kikkan Randall.  She came to LNR practice one day and I got the opportunity to do a sprint workout with (behind) her.

In addition to school, there are some things I associate with fall.  First, Cross Country running.  My coach lets me cross train, so I primarily ski and run in the races.  Minnesota switched from 4Ks to 5Ks this year, so it's been a season full of PR races as I figure out that extra 1000 meters at the end.

Me and my favorite running buddy, Tracy, racing in the Griak.

Another thing that means fall to me is football.  Most people in my family are diehard Packer fans, and we try to watch every Packer game we can.
My sister, Clay Matthews, and I.

We also had an MEA camp in Grand Rapids/Mt. Itasca this fall.  It was an intensity camp.  I was having some pretty serious issues breathing when I trained above threshold.  On the Monday before camp I went to a vocal cord dysfunction specialist, and got some breathing exercises to try, and they helped immensely, making my intensity camp much more successful.
Fall is gorgeous in Northern Minnesota!

So far senior year has been a blast!  I am one essay short of finishing my college applications, and have already been accepted to Montana State University and Michigan Tech, and am waiting for my decisions from a few more. I'll have some tough decisions in the next few months, but nonetheless I'm excited for what the next few years holds, wherever I go to school.

Here we go again: Spring training 2015

The LNR Fast Chickz started out with a camp in Afton last weekend with Caitlin Gregg and Jessie Diggins! (Silver and Bronze medalists at the World Championships!)
We somehow managed to fit 5 people, bikes, and gear in one van.

Afton is Jessie's hometown, so she showed us around the running, biking,
and rollerski routes, including where to find snow.

Our main workout was a 3.5 hour bike ride.

I had my mountain bike, but it worked just fine on the roads.

We started in Afton then managed to get to Wisconsin without getting lost.

...And we found lunch.  Safety first of course.

So our 3.5 hour bike went a little long, but no one complained.

Our last workout- a distance ski through Afton with Jessie and Caitlin.

Next on my list was a biathlon camp at Mount Itasca.  We did a couple good workouts, but mostly focused on shooting accuracy and getting back into shooting after having some time off.

Our last workout got a little muddy, but the girls made the best of it.

Ski....

 and shoot.

Spring also meant track. Go Red Knights!

The highlights included a personal record in the 1600m (mile) and 800m.

We also set two new school records in the distance medley relay and the 4x800.

Here's the team: Lauren, Tracy, Mae, and I after we set the 4x800 record.

The 4x800 record was very special for me because I have been part of multiple different teams trying to break the record for the last 3 years.  Each time someone on the team (including me) had an injury, illness, no competition, or a bad day.  It was amazing to finally get the record which has been my goal for the last few years.  My team was great, and Tracy even had a personal record time after getting sick 3 minutes before the race. Both records were over 20 years old.

Lastly, I love my city.  It's an amazing place to train with amazing people to train with.  The next two pictures were taken on the same trails.  Where else can you see a gorgeous city skyline and a minute later feel completely isolated from civilization?

Here's my view for summer training!  Just a quiet lake, some loons, me, and a kayak.

Cali time!! Get Psyched!!!

The season officially ended with Junior Nationals in Truckee, California.  There was just barely enough snow for a 2.5K loop, but we made it work.  Adaptability is a great trait for skiers!

We started the week by acclimating, which included ski dates.  It's a Midwest tradition to get dressed up and have a ski date every year, and it's always a blast!

J1s rocking the sassy ski date outfits!

We also got to spend an afternoon exploring Tahoe.

One of my favorite things about skiing is getting to meet new people.  I was so happy to get to see friends from other parts of the country, especially Nina!!

Keely Jackson, Nina Armstrong, and I.  None of us live in the same state!

I also met a bunch of the other Mid-A people, and took some selfies!

Midwest is Best

We stayed on Donner Lake... so this is what we looked at during morning runs.

And during lunch.

And when we got bored before dinner.

Or when we were really bored and climbed up the mountain behind it.

So you're probably wondering if I even raced....

And Julia! She had the best van music!

And of course I had amazing fans

Race 1: 1.something K sprint
Sprinting at altitude is not sprinting.

I had a rough start, and nearly ate it.

But I came back pretty well.

I qualified 15th so made it to the quarter finals.

I got 4th in my quarter final, so didn't move on.

However, I had a really fast quarter so finished in 13th overall.

Race 2: 5K skate individual

It was super slow conditions, and snowing.  The boys 15K in the morning was faster than the 10K girls times!
Photo: Brad Kautzer

My mom couldn't come to the races, so we sent this to her because she is one of my biggest supporters and it was weird for her not to be there.

I was very happy when this race was over.

My race didn't feel that great, but I finished in 15th place, which was much better than I expected to do as a first year J1. I mean U18.

Race 3: 10K classic mass start

The mass start is a crazy race.  I crashed really, really, really hard on the first downhill.  I still have a puncture wound on my knee and two bruises on my legs, and it was about a month ago.  Luckily I didn't notice it during the race, and having snow from head to toe (literally, I had snow stuck in my ear for over a kilometer) really helped keep me from over heating.  I had asked the coaches to throw water on me because it was 60 degrees or more, but I didn't need it thanks to the snow bath.

The chevron!  Get ready to drop or be dropped!
Photo: Brad Kautzer

I was able to race with people I knew the entire way.  This lap I skied with my roommate Alissa Niggeman and teammate Claire Benton.
Photo: Brad Kautzer

How many ski races can you wear a sports bra for and still over heat!
We were very happy to be done with that race and looking forward to the relays!

After my crash, I was in about 60th.  I fought my way forward and finished in 34th, after another crash on the last technical corner.  I was with two other girls and took it a little too fast.  I had practiced the corner a lot, but not after racing 9.6K, so my legs were really wobbly and I fell again, but jumped back up and sprinted into the finish!

Race 4: 3x3K classic relay

I raced with the U20 girls, which was a ton of fun! Both the U20 relay teams got medals, and the A relay won! My teammates were Alison Ternes and Sarah Bezdicek, and I couldn't have asked for anyone better! I trained with them all summer, and once we put on our matching glitter we were good to go kick some snow!

Here's Alison's tag to me.  She had a killer leg and got us into 6th place.
Photo: Brad Kautzer

I felt amazing during my leg.  It was probably my best race of the week.  I tagged off to Sarah in a close race for 3rd place.
Photo: Brad Kautzer

After I finished I ran over to cheer Sarah and the other MW team in.
As you can tell I was very excited!!!
Sarah had an amazing leg and brought us home in 4th place! She's so strong and crushed it!!!

After the race: the U20s, and me.

We might not be the fastest, but we definitely have the most swag!
Photo: Sarah Bezdicek

We cheered for the other races after too! I love cheering!

Here's a shoutout to the best roommate: Alissa Niggeman!
She might have a funny Wisconsin accent but it made the week even better!
(And Anna French for being awesome)

I'm not the only one who has a blog.

All in all, Truckee JN's were a huge success.  As a team, we got closer to beating New England for the Alaska Cup than ever before.  As flat landers, no one expected us to do well, but we all pushed through the thin air and had some amazing races at 7,200 feet with snow conditions most of us have never seen before.

The Loppet Ladies (LNR) took home the Club team title, and the overall combined men's and women's title.  Not bad for the 3rd year as a club.

When I got home, I got the opportunity to go meet the Gregg's at the airport.  Although I had had enough of airports for a few months, I was glad to go and pumped to see our training partner/coach and WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MEDALIST!!!! Congrats Team Gregg!!!

Now looking forward to spring and 2016.
There's no off season; next season started last week, so we are getting pumped and are training!!!
I can't wait for what the 2015-2016 season has in store for me! Anchorage, AK? West Yelly, MT? Jericho, VT? Cheile Grădiştei, Romania?  Grand Rapids, MN? Cable, WI?
High School Graduation!!! College!  As Piotr would say, GET PSYCHED!!!
